As the pressures and physical toll of the brutal sport mounted, "The Smashing Machine" became dependent on painkillers, which quickly eroded his formidable in-ring performance and mental clarity. This self-destructive path was made all the more volatile by his relationship with his girlfriend, a recovering alcoholic whose own struggles with sobriety created a heartbreaking codependency; while she desperately urged him to get clean, the high-stress, all-consuming cycle of addiction and fighting ultimately fractured their life, pushing the once-unbeatable champion into devastating defeat and a near-fatal overdose.
