While "Outie" believes he is "free" from the unbearable grief of his wife's death by opting for severance. This perceived freedom from emotional pain paradoxically binds him to Lumon, making him dependent on the procedure that ultimately imprisons a part of his very being. For Mark, both sides of his life are a testament to this chilling principle: the illusion of choice and freedom becomes the most effective mechanism of control.
